Ph.D. Thesis:    The Effect of Microclimate on Anna Apple Fruit’s Quality and
Storability. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of microclimate conditions during the growing season on fruit development in terms of its physical and chemical characteristics.  It was also targeted to determine the proper stage in which the growers can pick their fruits so as to enhance fruit-keeping quality through the season.

National coordinator for the project title “Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) for sustainable intensification of the small holder horticulture sector in Egypt”.

The project is requested to help Egypt in capitalizing on available know-how, from within Egypt and from abroad relating to GAP guidelines and water saving technologies for dissemination to small scale farmers. This would help and strengthen the competitiveness of the small scale farming sector and safeguard this sector as an important source of income and employment. It would allow expanding and consolidating the supply chain with safe and high quality vegetables for local market and export.
    
Duties: National coordinator to implement of the hole project activities including organization of Workshops, meetings, field visits, logistic tasks and supervising the Egyptian team Regarding technical and adminstrative  issues.

Duties: My supervision extended to about 600 researches and assistants working in 19 research departments and 2 central laboratories beside 6 research experimental stations covering all the governorates in Egypt. During my tenure as a director of the horticulture research institute (ARC- Egypt), I coordinated and developed a master plan for horticultural research policy and strategy that suited development of the Egyptian agriculture.
Our institute's research program carried all spheres related to fruits, vegetables, ornamental and medicinal plants, in addition to my specialized area of fruit and vegetable storage and processing, food safety. Moreover, I also took care of being involved in several public and private research as applied projects on food safety, integrated and organic fruits and vegetables production , protection of genetic resource and in campaign aiming at training farmers , traders , exporter and horticultural engineers or technicians , in close cooperation with the major stakeholders for the sake of development of horticultural production (fruits , vegetables, aromatic plants , production and postharvest activates in Egypt .
Furthermore, my mission was to help to solve bottle neck problems facing growers through holding seminars and extension service activities.
I also was responsible of implementing many bilateral projects of financed by foreign governments or organizations for developing Egyptian horticultural potentials in production and exportation especially in the European Union, USAID and other countries. My responsibility included as well exerting continuous effects to oversee managerial and financial aspects necessary for good function of the institute

The project also aims to reinforce institutions, to harmonize voluntary and obligatory standards to ensure free circulation of goods, for development of shared protocols for processing and production for the various crops, and on the promotion of organizations to manage the production chain and establish traceability systems.

o    Prepared a report concur in identifying a number of major trends that are affecting the development of the post-harvest sector in the Nile valley and Red Sea Sub-region. These are :
1.    Food security continues to be a major issue. Low agricultural production   and high post-harvest losses in most of the sub-region countries.
2.    Food quality and safety. In some cases unofficial recommendations were made against the consumption of certain produce such as fruits and vegetables, due to possible contamination. Quality standards are developed in many countries but are rarely practiced.
3.    Improvement of research program.
4.    Gender inequality and difficulties faced by women, especially in the rural areas is still a common problem in the sub-region countries.
5.    Suggest strategies for the creation of funds from governmental organizations and non-governmental organization.

6.    Organization a regional workshop funded by F.A.O / GFAR on global initiative on post-harvest technology for the West Asia North Africa (WANA) region held in Cairo - Egypt, 4-6 February 2002.

An Economic Analysis of Food Safety Standards and Its
Implication on Agricultural Trade in the Context of EU-MED

“The Case of SPS Standards and EUREPGAP Requirements”

Project procurement for collecting whole data information from Egyptian exporters related to this research.

The main focus of this research will be on exports of horticultural products from three countries in Mashrek region: Egypt, Syria and Jordan. This research project aims at examining policy, technical and institutional trade disputes that may arise between the EU and MP countries due to agricultural and food safety measures represented in SANITARY AND PHYTOSANITARY (SPS) standards and EUROPGAP. This research will identify what does it take to comply with these measures in terms of appropriate policies, technical and trade procedures while at the same time acknowledging the genuine concerns of all parties about safety and quality of agricultural and food products. The specific objectives of the
study are the following:
o    To identify the technical, institutional and policy constraints faced by governments and exporters (private sector) in the selected countries in meeting
the requirements of SPS and EUREPGAP;
o    To determine the expected trade impact of complying with these standards on the competitiveness of agricultural and food exports;
o    To develop a strategy to meet the food safety requirement through identifying the most appropriate technical and economical means that the EU can best assist the MP countries to improve domestic technical capacity in this area;
o    To analyze the complexity of certain tariff and non-tariff barriers, within the framework of food safety measures, which hinders the trade of agricultural products in several MP with the EU; and
o    To assess the existing SPS standards, the EUREPGAP regulations and the actually applied standards in the studied MP countries and compare them with international standards. This assessment should lead to recommendations on ways and means of harmonizing and simplifying these standards and how to develop an euro-Mediterranean bio-ethic agriculture.

o    Conducted research in finding new post-harvest handling methods that are suitable for local and external markets. The research focused on different methods in fruits' post-harvest stages including packaging, storing, artificial ripening and marketing. The research aimed at attaining high post-harvest quality to different fruits.
o    Conducted experiments to maintain quality and freshness of medicinal herbs in Egypt (Sage, Rosemary, Basil, Thyum, Dill, coriander, etc). The quality is maintained by using some physical treatments such as cleaning, packing herbs with polyethylene and polypropylene materials and cool chaining. These experiments are sponsored by ATUT/USAID project. The purpose was to increase the exportation of fresh herbs toward international markets.
o    Conducted experiments to apply post-harvest handling methods of the research to solve various problems that are associated with enhancing fruit quality preservation such as picking at appropriate maturity stage, proper packaging, suitable storage environment and transportation means.
o    Directed training sessions for agriculture extension agents on the preparation of fruits and vegetables for fresh market including harvesting systems at proper maturity stages, the best packaging of fruits and vegetables and the need for temperature management in different Egyptian Governorates.

Agricultural Technology Utilization Transfer (ATUT) Project, USAID, Egypt, A collaborative project between Horticultural Institute in Egypt and Florida, University in USA sponsored by ATUT/USAID 1999 – 2002.

o The objective of the project is to introduce new varieties and rootstocks of
Mangos and study their post-harvest technology behavior. The project studied the
effect of some safe treatment methods to prolong the storage life of Mango fruits for exportation.
o Conducting extensive research for analyzing the physical and chemical properties of Mangos during storage period.
o Several properties were analyzed amongst which are: weight loss, peel & flesh color, soluble solids, acidity and the contents for sugar, vitamin C and carotene pigment.

o The objective of the project is to collect data information of fruits and vegetables.
This data comprises daily prices, packaging types, production areas, observations
on unstable prices and observations on crops’ quantity and quality.  The information was gathered from wholesale markets and published in different
mass communication media for growers such as: newspapers, radio and TV.

o The objective of the project was the Effectiveness of ozone and high CO2 atmospheres as alternatives to methyl bromide fumigation for control of insects and decay on fruits and vegetables.
o    Studied the effect of Ozone gas on the Kiwi and orange fruits. The study analyzed the effect on the two fruits in terms of different quality parameters such as: weight loss, firmness, peel firmness & moisture content (orange only), color, external injury, soluble solids, treatable acidity, respiration and ethylene production rates.
o    Studied the effect of controlled atmosphere on banana ripening. The study aimed to prolong the storage life of the fruit for exportation through analyzing different quality parameters such as: respiration and ethylene rate, firmness, color, rate of external browning, starch and PH.

Collaborative project sponsored by National Agriculture Research Project (NARP) and the US Agency for International Development in Cairo, Egypt and administered by the USDA/Foreign Agricultural Service.  6/93 – 9/95

o    The objective of the project was to study the physical treatments for the maintenance of quality in fresh horticultural produce. The study aimed to develop needed information on the post-harvest biology of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals produced in Egypt and California for export.  Researches were conducted on various physical techniques with potential ability to reduce post- harvest losses due to chilling injury, physical damage, diseases or insect infestation, including new packaging technologies, variable temperature regimes, and use of modified/controlled atmospheres.
o    Researched the efficacy of hot water treatments for decay control as evaluated on apricot, banana and mango fruits.  Fruits were dipped in hot water (temperature and duration dependent on each commodity) and cooled to the storage temperature with cold air. Quality attributes (including flesh firmness, color, acidity and sugar content) and weight loss rate were also evaluated during
storage.
o    Studied the controlled atmosphere storage on banana fruits ripening.
Investigated the modified atmosphere packaging of some citrus fruits in Egypt.
The study aimed to improve the marketability of fruits through analyzing different quality attributes such as water loss rate, the percentage of juice, color, acidity, vitamin C percentage and soluble solids.
